From Giving Tuesday to Today: John & Angeleen’s Journey Comes Full Circle
Each client that comes through our program has a story that matters. But some stories stay with us long after a client’s last day in our program. We are honored to share the full-circle journey of John and Angeleen, a resilient couple whose determination, love, and faith carried them through decades of hardship and brought them to this beautiful moment: the successful completion of our Recuperative Care program and a fresh start in their very own apartment.
A Love Rekindled Amidst Recovery
We first introduced John and Angeleen to our community back in December 2024, on Giving Tuesday. Their story quickly became one of hope and perseverance. High school sweethearts whose lives took different turns, they spent more than 23 years apart—John serving a lengthy prison sentence, and Angeleen facing addiction, severe health issues, and homelessness. Still, their bond never wavered.
Angeleen was the first to arrive, seeking medical stability and a second chance. Though her healing process was interrupted by several health setbacks, she never lost hope, especially knowing that John’s release was on the horizon. But even then, challenges such as housing transitions and logistical delays postponed their reunion, testing their patience and resolve.
Then came the unexpected. John was referred to WPCC’s Recuperative Care program, reuniting the couple after more than two decades! Their experience in our program, captured in this Instagram reel, was transformative for both of them.
Walking the Path Together
From that day on, John and Angeleen became each other’s greatest source of strength. They attended every medical and mental health appointment, worked closely with their case managers, and engaged fully in the services offered. Their consistency and commitment to healing stood out to every member of our team. In a final conversation with staff, John reflected on their time at WPCC:
“I had to put my trust in you guys. You were my only hope after getting out of prison. Some people take advantage, walk off and return to the streets—but we worked hard for this. We used every service you offered, and now we’re walking off into our own apartment, ready for a better life.”
It’s hard to overstate what a milestone this is, not just for John and Angeleen, but for all of us at WPCC who had the privilege of walking alongside them.
A New Chapter Begins
As of July 2025, John and Angeleen are no longer clients in our program. They are neighbors, community members, and role models of what’s possible when stability and compassion are prioritized. They’re focused on building a life grounded in and purpose, complete with a new apartment and goals for further independence, including owning a car and staying engaged in their recovery community.
Their journey reminds us why we do what we do.
We are incredibly proud of John and Angeleen and wish them nothing but continued growth, love, and success in the next chapter of their lives.
